A beautiful landscape doesn’t have to mean every weekend spent on maintenance. With smart design choices, you can have a yard that looks great and largely takes care of itself. Here are some of our favorite low-maintenance landscaping ideas for Southwest Virginia homes.

Choose Hardy, Regional Plants

The single biggest factor in low-maintenance landscaping is choosing the right plants. Native and well-adapted plants that thrive in our climate need less water, less feeding, and less fussing than finicky ornamentals. Group plants with similar sun and water needs together, and they’ll largely take care of themselves.

Perennials that come back year after year also save you the effort and cost of replanting each season.

Consider Rock and Gravel Beds

Decorative rock and gravel beds are a favorite for low upkeep. Unlike mulch, they don’t break down and never need annual replacement, and with quality landscape fabric and edging they resist weeds. They can also double as drainage features in spots that tend to wash out.

Define Beds with Quality Edging

Crisp, well-defined bed edges do more than look good — they keep grass from creeping into beds and beds from spilling into the lawn, which cuts down on maintenance. Clean edging is one of those details that makes a landscape look cared-for with very little ongoing effort.

Reduce Lawn Where It Makes Sense

Turf is one of the most maintenance-hungry parts of a yard. Replacing hard-to-mow or struggling lawn areas with beds, ground cover, or hardscaping reduces mowing and watering while adding visual interest. A patio or gravel area can turn a problem spot into a feature.

We’re happy to design a landscape around exactly how much maintenance you want to take on — just let us know.
